Mount Rose, (10,776')

Route: Tahoe Rim Trail to Mount Rose Trail, class 1.

Notes: After a night spent along the road to the Mount Rose Campground, I spent a few minutes eating breakfast and coughing up phlegm from my heinous never-ending cold before heading up the Tahoe Rim Trail at 7:15am. The trail was pretty much as expected, with snow coverage of about 40%. I reached the saddle that marks the beginning of the Mount Rose Wilderness (I could have legally mountain-biked to this point -- maybe next time) in about 90 minutes. The remaining 1000', mainly on snow-free, wind-exposed switchbacks, took about 40 minutes. Views of the Tahoe basin were suberb, views east toward Reno were unremarkable. I searched unsuccessfully for a summit register and later, after seeing about 25 people on the way down, decided the peak was too frequently climbed to have one. The descent, which involves about 300-400' of gain, took about two hours. Incidentally, Mount Rose in the only SPS peak in Nevada.
